The Italian Fiat company demonstrated a new model of armored reconnaissance and police vehicle in 1938. In 1940, the model was put into production and was named the AB40. The initial armament of three 8mm machine guns was changed to one 20mm cannon and one 8mm machine gun with the use of a larger turret for the production of the AB41. After Italy�s surrender to the Allies in September 1943, German forces confiscated a number of AB41s and modified them with more powerful engines, new exhaust silencers, and other improvements. The vehicles with such improvements were classified as AB43s, and they were used primarily in the Italian theater of operations by the German forces.
